I just watched Eternal Sunshine of the spotless mind, I loved the movie, and it really made me think. So I got to wondering... would people really have a memory of a person (maybe from a bad relationship), a time period, or event erased from their mind? I thought I would at first, but the wise teach us to hold on to all the thoughts and memories of mistakes and circumstances we have, even though they might not have been pleasant. That way, we can use these past experiences in the future, to prevent making further mistakes or getting into things we shouldnt... so what do you think? Would you erase some horrible memory or person from your past to end the pain it might have caused you? And please explain why or why not. THANKS!

I personally would not. All my experiences and relationships in the past have made me who I am today. It is with these memories and new experiences and relationships that continue to help me learn and grow as a person. Without the bad, there is no knowing of the good. I am also the type of person who can work past the bad experiences. Having said that, I haven't had such a hard life so I wouldn't be able to answer for those who have suffered greatly. But even people who have suffered a lot can come out of that a much wiser person.

I used to think that. I saw my whole family murdered. Pretty traumatic. I wish it hadn't happened, but if I could just wipe out that memory, wouldn't that be a bit cowardly? Better to live with, and to treasure, the memory of the love we all had for each other than to run away. There's some kind of moral issue involved here.

i guess i would have a lot of memories to choose from, but as much as they've shown me the worst of people, even people in my family, they've only made me stronger. They've made me believe that i deserve a lot better and that sometimes we have to be grateful for what we have. Some of my saddest moments have taught me to appreciate even the smallest gestures and tell those who we love how we feel because we'll never know what happens. Its reinforced my belief that there are people in this world who truly care about me and trust me., and i wouldnt change that any time soon..

We all have bad memories, i wouldn't do such thing although some memories hurt.
for example if u have lost someone dear i think you still wanna recall him/her when you sat with yourself or when you need a push in this life.
another reason is that memories are also experience even though they hurt sometimes but this way you wouldnt have to be hurt again.

You can erase your memory, but there's going to be someone else who knew what you did, so you'll have to erase their memory as well... It just gets more complicated after that. Wondering who else could have seen you sail across the floor face first tripping over your own feet, then there's the thud on the ground... Who heard that? Yep, they need an eraser too.
Just better to file it in the o'l memory bank and say... W.T.F. That's life!

i have a couple of event i would just erase.
they were painful, i did not grow stronger from them, they have caused great pain over my life. I think i would be happier, and mentally healthier if i could just wipe them out, since i don't seem to be able to process them and move on.
