I usually just keep repeating "go to sleep" over and over. My mind tends to wander like crazy as soon as I lay down, so that helps me not think as much. After a couple minutes, my brain just gets tired of hearing it and I fall asleep...
If that doesn't work, try rubbing the bottom of your big toe really lightly. I read in some article that that can make you so calm you want to fall asleep. I tried it once and it actually worked (bet you didn't hear that one before!)...
You can also try some warm chamomile tea (sp?) or regular tea with lemon (decaf of course)... Or some people say warm milk helps, doesn't work for me personally, but you can give it a try if you like milk. Even some sugar-free hot cocoa can work...
Find a really stupid book and start reading at a random page, that might bore you to sleep...
Stare at the ceiling and concentrate on breathing really deeply then exhaling really slowly. Really try not to let your mind wander. Just let yourself relax...
You can try taking some Benadryl or other sleep aid depending on what time you need to get up. You should give it at least 8 or 9 hours to wear off... Not tonight since you might end up oversleeping, but it might work for you in the future...
Good luck though! And congratulations on your new job!

Getting Adequate Sleep
Often it is hard to get a good night of sleep. Even when we do fall asleep the quality of the sleep may not be sufficient. The following ways can assist in getting that good night sleep and subsequently the benefits thereof.
Never Oversleep: Oversleeping may set the bodies clock to a different cycle. This will make trying to fall asleep much harder.
Take A Warm Bath: A warm bath will sooth and relax. However, a shower will have the opposite effect so these should be avoided.
Exercise: Exercising, particularly aerobic, during the day will sufficiently tire one out and sleep will come faster at night. Intense training sessions during the late evening will have the opposite effect.
Avoid Alcohol, Caffeine & Tyrosine-Rich Foods At Night: Caffeine causes hyperactivity and wakefulness. Tyrosine- rich foods are brain stimulating and may keep one awake. Alcohol significantly disrupts sleep by interfering with the stages of sleep.
Avoid Sleeping Pills: These may work temporarily but in the long term will cause disturbed sleep patterns.
Correct Sleeping Environment: Keep your room reasonably cool (about 60 degrees). Humidity may cause disrupted sleep. A fan running or soft background music may help to relax and encourage sleep.
Make evenings relaxed, not stressful affairs.
Do not watch television in bed. This may also increase alertness. The brain may also decide that bedtime is for television watching and refuse to sleep.

I meditate.
Lay down in a dark room. If it's not quiet, put on a fan or other white noise.
Pick a peaceful image. Could be a good memory, could be a planned getaway, could be a simple image like a fluffy white cloud. (I imagine a spinning, glowing ball of light, usually a soothing blue or green.)
Focus on the image. Be there, be in it. Feel the breeze, the sun, whatever is in your image.
If you notice yourself tensing up, relax your muscles again. (My shoulders are a habitual tension point.)
When worries rear up, imagine them flowing over you and go right back to your image. The worry isn't real, your image is.
Best of luck with your new job, and I hope this helps!

what sucks is your body will shut down when it wants to. I'm not sure if there is anything natural you can do besides relaxing. This is tough. Good luck on getting some sleep. If you don't sleep well, eat a good breakfast. good luck tomorrow.

I always drink warm/hot milk. It's not at all as gross as it sounds. My mother would always give it to me when i was growing up because i had insane insomnia problems, and it usually worked for some reason. Or take a half a gravol (make sure its not the non-drowsy kind).
