A sound card needs to reflect the quality of the speakers and vice verse. Most computers sold today come with a decent on board sound to go with cheap speakers. Once you begin to spend over $100 for speakers and are interested in quality sound, either for music or gaming, it is time to look at sound cards. One problem is that "quality" sound for music and gaming is not always the same. Gaming, and action type movies, look for a lot of "punch" in the sound whereas most music requires a more even spread of sound. A good place to spend some time reading other people's opinions is on the product reviews at the site listed below. After you have read enough of them you will begin to get a feel for what certain speakers are best for and what cards are appropriate.
