You have electronic ignition I take it? No spark to the plug? They have the pickup (instead of points) those wires go to the "ignitor box" which allows current through the coil.. Any one of those parts can fail. Do you have an ohmeter or a continuity tester. The pickup coil is tested (with wiring unconnected) for a short or an open circuit(make sure you don't mistake readings on the ohmeter). Next check the coil for a short or an open winding. If all ok so far it's the ignitor box. You can check those too with an ohmeter but it's a little more involved. This assumes all wiring is good.Maybe a Yamaha mechanic will come by who knows the subject better.
Here's a website for Rick Siemen mentioned above.

You dont get 12volts on a CDI system. The 'black box is silver. I have 1980something YZ250 but havnt had any time to look at it.
it does have an ignition coil though, probably specific for that bike.Do a search for Rick Seimens, (think spelling is right) He was dirt bike Mr. Know It All in the 80's, living in Mexico now but has a website. (think its called 'Dont Ask')
Another thought,
If its a street/trail its a DT250, they came with points on early ones and CDI on later models. You can get service manual from Haynes for it but you'll have to look it up
