My 5 month old son took a tumble from bed and banged the side of his head on a wooden floor. After observing him for the next few days he appears absolutely fine and healthy, and active, but the huge lump that appeared has still not gone down after 5 days. Is this normal? How long should the swelling last? Before anyone says "take him to hospital" , we live in China and I am less than happy with the standard of knowledge and care in hospitals here. Thanks in advance.

>>>> The lump certainly feels soft like a build up of fluid. Sadly there is no such thing here as a 'Doctor's Surgery' system, only hospitals, and my experience of them to date worries me about some of the practices going on there. Thanks for all the helpful replies. Looks like I'm just gonna have to go and take our chances.

It is much too long for the head to be swollen after a simple fall. If you don't have access to good medical care, I would suggest you contact a *medical* Web site for information, not a lay site like Yahoo Answers.
But if you can't trust the medical care in China, you may need to leave the country to get *someone* reliable to look at this...

I understand your concern about the care in China, but this is yours babies life. You are responsible for anything that happens to your child. Did you ice it soon after it happened? If the lump is still there, there might be a little contusion, meaning it could be some fluid build up or something. Now, I'm not a doctor, but I do work in the medical field. I've seen so many cases like this, where parents think it will just go away. To be on the safe side please take your son to the doctor. Your sons scull still hasn't fully developed yet, it's better to be safe than sorry. Good Luck!!

I lived in China for a while too so I know how scary the medical stuff can be there but as a mom, if I were in your situation I would still take my baby in. Just make sure you know exactly what they're doing and don't let them do anything that makes you feel uncomfortable. I would definately get x-rays if the swelling hasn't gone down at all from the first day. Hey, at least it should be a little cheaper there than here (usa).

First of all, what the HELL is a 5 month old baby doing in a bed that he can fall out of!!!! Next, go get an x-ray! I don't care if you're "less than happy with the standard of care..." even bad doctors are still a better doctor than you are, unless you have x-ray vision, of course. Oh, and P.S. don't leave an infant anywhere where he can fall from, got it?

I wonder has the size of the lump decreased at all? I think as long as his behavior is fine he's probably ok. If he were 1mo. old, I would worry! But given his age and the fact it was only from a bed, not higher than that, and he's not acting out of ordinary, He should be fine. My toddler is constantly falling and banging his head on things, I think God gave kids skulls of stone!!! They're so much tougher than one would think. Do keep a close eye on the knot, and his behavior.

i would put an cold pack on his head to take the swelling down and as long as he is not sleeping to much and not in pain from headaches or anything i think it will be ok usually swelling differs from person to person give it a few more days but if he starts acting funny not his normal self take to hospital no matter what the health care is like there.

Really after 5 days he should be seen. Any swelling resulting from the fall should have gone down by now.

If it is still swollen I would take him to a doctor, my children have tumbled too the same situation and they are fine, but I would still check it out.

a foreskin should not fall off after circumcision. if this is the case, the doc did it wrong. when circumcised, the doctor removes all, or most of the foreskin and/or frenulum. once in a while, like in my case, leaving some or most of the foreskin and /or frenulum intact is normal. and nobody should tell you it was wrong, because it is personal opinion. personally, im against it, but im not going to tell people what to do, i tell them research it and make their own decision.
