Today, pads have an adhesive strip on the back to attach to your panties. In the days if the sanitary belt, the pads were called "sanity napkins" and had no adhesive, but had long strips at either end to wind thru the catch on the front and back of the belt. So when it was all put together, the effect was kind of like wearing an uncomfortable thong. Prior to manufactured "napkins", though, cloth napkins were used to catch the flow and, yes, that is where we get the term "on the rag".

The sixties saw the end of the girdle. A heavy rubber suit designed for many reasons. If she had a pad she could defend herself in any battle squeezed in a girdle. Before paper and cotton pads were sold rags were used and boiled often for personal cleaning. Washing soda was caustic enough to sterilize the rags. and home made soap was made from caustic lye. In primitive times native women were separated from the males until they stop flowing as germs could kill and only the women knew safety. The weakly female was feigned and real. Still today few men know little of how the moon light controls the life cycle of humans and plants. Only women know sunlight is made differently from moonlight.

Good question. I've wondered the same thing. I heard that before the 70's, they used to wear belts to hold bads up that were extremely uncumfy. I think having my period now is extremely annoying, I can't imagine having it when there wasn't that stuff. I guess that's why so many of them were pregnant so often. :)
