how to network a pc with a mac?

I have a mini mac which I'd like to use as a music server, so I can be able to play itunes songs from my XP laptop

Apples all support windows networking, this is by far the easiest way to set it up, consult your apple support center for instructions. You could also use itunes to share music, but you could only play it on your pc with itunes, so that option may not work for you.

I have just used windows networking, on other macs, it has worked oK, but never on a mini mac, I would try it though
