If I were a boss I wouldn't make this distinction. I would hire people based on their ability to create in me the impression that they could get things done.
WHat I mean is this. Lets say I run a hotel and one day a guest comes in with a confirmation letter for a room that we don't have, because somebody slipped up and lost the reservation.
Many people become stressed out in those kinds of scenarios and get nervous and panicky, but it isn't really a big deal at all.
I would want a person who I thought would get up off his *ss and do some work when a guest needed something and who would get thrown for a loop by surprises like this one.
I am very well educated and yet I am relaxed and solution oriented, so I don't there is necessarily a distinction, although I would say that I would hire a working class man with credetnials before I would hire some yuppy out of college.

It would depend on the type of job but it is easier to teach a street smart person the books than to catch up what has been missed out of a book smarts life.

The street smart because what is important right now is the application on what you have learned from school. Some are only good in books and has good grades but not good in oral or poor in performance. I would rather hire a person who has the experience, flexible, and has the expertise on the field.

Depends on the job, but I would probably hire street smart. I've met too many people in my life who are book smart but have absolutely no common sense whatsoever.

Definitely street smart. Book smarts are great and are necessary but street smart proves your ability to think for yourself and to be independent.

You need both. I think like 70/30 book/street is ideal in engineering although we have too many 90/10s. For other occupations, I can't say but I think it varies by the job.
