I'm almost positive that I am the "dumbest" person my 14 year old knows. I demand communication with her however, and usually she comes to me with her problems with school, friends, boys, or whatever. I never try to prove her wrong, I love her and want to see her make good choices that she can be proud of...if she is absolutely refusing to let me make a point, I ask her to tell me what she thinks is the best solution and we compromise from there...curfew, spending, cell phone, computer time, who she hangs out with, pretty much everything. Stay involved and let them know that you respect them and they have to respect themselves...they will respect you too, even though they know everything and you are dumb and gay.

If you're lowering yourself to a teenager level, then you have more problems than just trying to argue with a teen. Be a grown up and take charge of the situation. If they don't listen, then punish them, take away all the things that they enjoy and make them do all the chores around the house. The key to this being a victory for you is to follow through and to be stern the entire time. Teens are like dogs, if they sense fear in you they will exploit it and make you their "b itc h". Why do you think that the youth of today is the way they are, it's because parents lost their spine years ago and now their children walk all over them. STAND UP FOR YOURSELF AND BE A GROWNUP.

If they are right, don't argue...unless you are an idiot.
If they are wrong, ask them to prove it using a reliable source.
... and if you are going to argue, you might want to brush up on the topics beforehand. They will learn to respect your opinion more if you don't argue unless you know what you are talking about. Learning how to spell infinite, as an example, would be a good start... or at least learn how to use the "Check Spelling" button.

You really can't; you have to set the ground rules young (no discussion EVER of safety rules). Otherwise, what I have found most effective (and emotionally satisfying as well) is turning the tables on them. Roll your eyes, make an exhale noise and turn your back on them. It infuriates them, they know you're making fun of them, and trivializing their arguments by doing it. They realize their brilliant argument might not be so great after all.

you cant they know everything and you as the parent know nothing. the way that you know that you have matured is that you reailize that you know nothing and your children tell you how to do things that you thought you knew how to do for years before they came along. lol it doesnt get better till they are in your shoes and you are in your parents shoes and you can laugh at the grandkids infinate knowledge together and so on and so on and so on and so on

Expect what they're going to say, and prove them wrong. My parents really don't have this problem with me. My mum's really good with English and current events and stuff, and my dad knows a lot about science and math. There's no way I could prove my point in anything!
