I think that Chinese movies portray romance is a much better fashion than our very own Hollywood. In the former, more emphasis is given to how the love develops between the guy and the girl & they do it so perfectly and beautifully; whereas Hollywood puts too much emphasis on sex, rather than the real underlying love that has developed between the characters.

Don't you feel the same way as me?

I think this really depends on your preference when it comes to romantic stories.

1. Asian romantic movies (straight drama, not comedy) tend to avoid the sex because it's (relatively more) taboo - but this is changing.
2. Asians really love really dramatic love stories, unrequited love and so on... you know the type, where some guy and girl love each other but cannot get married due to class/money differences or something and so they get married to different people and they remeet sometime in the future but the love hasn't died... this kind of story has been retold many times in Hollywood sans sex, just not that recently.

Another thing to remember is that the Asian films that you might see abroad have generally proven themselves to be quite decent already. Hollywood films don't have to get past the same level of quality control before they come to your cinema (especially if you're in the States). Asian cinema does have its own fair share of terrible movies!

Yup!

I suggest :

Bride with White Hair
aka Bai fa mo nu zhuan (1993)
visual poetry... emotionally devastating... one insane mother of a bad guy...and my favorite romantic couple...Brigitte Lin and Leslie Cheung as the star crossed lovers

Ashes in Time
aka Dung che sai duk (1994)
in short...swordsmen and the women who love them...their passion, regrets, remorse...
a lyrical journey of love through pain and misery...
beauriful.
(get VHS or laser disc...DVD port sucks big time.)

Swordsman II
aka Xiao ao jiang hu zhi dong fang bu bai (1991)
This is the film along with Bride...that brought me back into watching asian film in 1992...and I have never left.
Nobody bends the gender like the Asians...nobody.
Brigitte Lin plays Invincible Asia...(mortal enemy to Blademaster played by Jet Li.)..undergoes castration for only a woman's body can hold the tremendous energy of the ultimate Kung Fu...which he will use to kill all who oppose him. The energy changes his body physically and emotionally until he is no longer male...and she begins to see the world in a new light...as well as her plans for conquest...and love...in the face of her sworn enemy...Blademaster...the one and only Jet Li.
Unbelievable. There are moments in this movie that will always be with me...no words are suffecient. Masterpiece.

Comrades, almost a love story
aka Tian mi mi (1996)
The direction is flawless, the casting is perfect. Leon's innocent face is exquisite and Maggie's strength and determination deem her a likable heroine....this movie paints a beautiful portrait of ideal love, one which surpasses time and place and confirms the ideal belief that certain things are meant to happen in our life.
One of my all time favourite films...smoking!!!

Although Hollywood films are fine...and the older films are the best....nothing moves me in quite the same way as do the asian movies. Maggie Cheung is the bomb...and Brigitte Lin is divine.

cí...

I love asian films but haven't really gotten into their romantic comedies and dramas. I'm more into the action and horror flicks from over there. But one asian romance film I have seen is 'Turn Left, Turn Right'. Its a good one. Check it out if you haven't seen it.
