Anyone who says it started with one band in the 1970s, or in one particular country, is seriously oversimplifying things or doesn't know the history.

Punk rock started in 1973.
The first shot fired was by none other than Iggy Pop and his bandmates, the Stooges. In '72, Iggy smashed his way through a recording studio for 34 minutes dodging chainsaws and heroin-soaked needles that coked-up strippers were throwing at him. The Stooges provided a musical backdrop to the mayhem as it happened. Luckily, tape was rolling. It was released the following year as the album Raw Power.

punk started in london with groups like the sex pistols (recently inducted into the rock 'n' roll hall of fame......and there were several groups in the 80's consiered punk.......and greenday is so not punk....not anymore

the foundation for punk was laid down by the band velvet underground from new york. followed by the stoogies with iggy pop, the new york dolls the ramones and then the clash and sex pistols
