Just her, there is no punishment for him. Adultery is the same way, only the woman is punished - by death.

Yes, it is true. Women in some of the Middle Eastern countries can not have children without being married or they will be punished for bring shaming to their family, even if the birth of the child is due to rape. She and her child will become outcasts to all of those who know her, if she is not put in jail or put to death first. If they are unmarried, they have to keep themselves covered, especially their faces. Married women can not socialize with their husbands when their husbands are entertaining, or, in some cases when the husband is discussing business. Also, when a female child is born, she is not really considered equal to a male born child. If the US had some of the "relationship" rules used by some Middle Eastern countries, there would be less or no woman in power in the US and that would be a sad thing for the US.

Yes and the strict dress rules for a woman are ridiculous..hair and everything covered. But wait. We have a similar situation here in the USA, its called high fashion. If you live in a big city like New York, you have dress in high fashion if you are a woman. And men too have to abide by the rules. If not, you are considered like a looser or something..and won't get or last on good jobs. Glad I live in a small rural area where I can dress and act the way I want....Midwestern rural area...where there is a lot of diversity as well.

Perchance there are yet a few in those lands of the stature of a Kemal Ataturk. Europe once suffered under centuries of religious totalitarianism until a great thought wave illuminated the dark corners, not without much struggle. Separating religion from state ennobled both institutions. That would happen in the Middle East as well, however difficult to imagine at the dawn of this century ... this century, whose close will doubtless bring a very different world, one way or another...

Yes...Its called Wahabbi law where strict punishments (jail time, beatings, whippings and amputations) are given to even the smallest of offences. Such rules exist for men as well as women, but women suffer worse since the Middle eastern tradition dictates that women have no rights (they are not even given basic education), while men have the ability/right to flaunt them (through patronage or kickbacks and blackmail). These ridiculously heinous laws are sometimes nationally enforced (like Saudi Arabia) but are more enforced by uneducated tribes and cults. By the way... Wahabbi law is very prominent in Islamic world terrorist ideology (they plan to use it as THE law in the evil Islamic Empire that they plan to establish should they defeat the West), and exists virtually in every Muslim country (the incidence is less in the progressive/secular countries like Malaysia, Libya and Turkey but are more common in the Islamist/barbarian infested nations like Saudi Arabia and Afghanistan).
To the guy who said it would be nice to have this in the West...I am aware of the degredation of Western moral values...but I will die first before I allow my nation to have such evil and repressive laws whose brutality, inequality and biases have no place in modern society.

Some regions, yes. It's mainly that a man may not Touch a woman who is not his wife. I believe the talking is as long as they are both unmarried and as long as her father or male family member is there, it's a guarded situation.

In middle eastern tradition men are supposed to stay away from other women if they are married. They can still visit sisters and cousins that are girls. They can still talk to other women as well but nothing sexual or anything that may make the women feel uneasy.

Yes, and unless everyone wakes up to what is happening in the world, your grandchildren will live under those rules.

hm, i dont know about that.
middle eastern societies tend to be VERY patriarchal conservatives (i.e. centered on males) so it would seem to me that the example you gave would be, in fact, the opposite. Men are allowed many freedoms whereas women are afforded very few.
In saudi arabia, for example, it is illegal for women to operate vehicles.
