Flash drives will be replaced by holographic memory which takes less space (if you want a large storage that is) and has a much greater capacity than flash memory. InPhase Technologies and Maxell produce holographic memory.
From what I've heard it will be used by media companies for storage of High Definition Video as early as 2007 due to the size factor (much smaller than ordinary hard drives/ other storage devices currently used).
Consumer use will not be until at least 2015. I put some extra information in the sources if you're interested.
This is a side note. The first Holographic drives for consumers 2015 will be able to carry 1000-1600 GB (doesn't sound like top of the line for 2015 but I'm sure the capacity will increase rapidly after that).
The ones currently being tested for industry use( from Inphase) are around the the size of two dvds stacked on each other but have a 300GB storage.

Floppy's are not gone for good, some people still use them. Flash drives will be obsolete as soon as everyone in the world buys a phone that can have data uploaded to it and one can transfer that data to another phone/computer or other device via blue tooth or the like. By the way patent pending, so don't go and try to make a buck out of someone else's idea. ;)

Honestly, flash drives will be around for many, many years...flash drives have been around even before the floppy in the form of memory modules, same principle...the only difference is that now they are able to fit more data in a smaller space, that trend will continue for a very long time. So, flash drives will be around for awhille, but the capacity they can handle and the interface to the computer will all change.
I imagine that we will have a 10gb flash drive in a few years, and the interface will change from USB to firewire.

cd rw replaced the floppies. But with the technology of flash drives and micro drives that hold over 4GB its hard to imagine anything getting better. It really comes down to form factor and space and portability which flash drives and micro drives all have.

I still use my floppy driives. I do have a flash drive and I transferred 177 of my floppies on it and still have room for more. Flash drives are great.

I suspect some form of optical/crystaline mass-storage device will take hold. There are technologies putting a gig of data into 4 square centimeters of crystal (measures 2cm x 2cm x 1mm).

I think the next technology advance will lead to very small Hard drive which will replace fash drives..
At least hope so :)

they will most likely be around a while, they last a long time, are convientent and are getting where they hold a huge abount of space
