Because they have a low self-esteem. So that is how they try to impress people.

Some people, on the other hand, are exactly as smart as they seem to be. Why not? There are people who know a lot, people who don't, fakers of both types, and honest ones of both types. There are many others besides these personality types. Why pick on only one type of person (intellectualizer) out of the almost infinite number of other types? Why not diss people who make no sense, whether or not they intellectualize? There seem to be a lot more nonsensical people in the world than any other type.
I don't care whether people intellectualize or not - as long as they make sense and their answers pertain to the questions.

Not all of us know about everything & anything! So when that person is very familiar with a certain subject, only then will they start talking and intellectualizing it! But if that topic is not something they know, and they start blabbering into thin air... thats a sign of trying to impress without knowing about it!!

Some people want to act smarter than they are. They hear a word and think they know everything about the subject. The ex-CEO of the company I worked for is like that. She knew bits and bytes and pixels. Every time we had a converstion about computers or networking she would throw those words out like it meant something. No wonder that place got sold.

People sound egotistic when they speak like they have a dictionary in their back pocket.
I've heard it said, don't use a less usual word when a common one will do fine. If it doesn't add or clarify the message that you are giving it just sounds like you are trying too hard.
Most newspapers write at a fifth grade level because that is the level most Americans read at. I would prefer it if they would go on to middle school already.
God's Blessings, ;-)

It has come to my attention that there is a veritable plethora of over sophisticated verbosity in the prose submitted in response to queries generated by this website's open forum format. It seems obvious to me that there must be some restraints imposed upon those personages who respond with overlong and too intense replies. Therefore, I suggest that all those who indulge their penchant for overlong responses be ostracized.
OR we should just tell those smart a s s jerks to shut the --ck up!

Ya know, I was just thinking the exact same thing. I ask a simple question and I get a 13 page thesis in reply, almost like Martin Luther and the paper he nailed to the church door. Who do these people think they are?

I think it's b/c they're afraid of rejection...some are so afraid of it that they "pompously intellectualize everything". If they sound more interesting, they'll get attention. If they sound boring, they'll be rejected, which they fear.

Because a person that tries to impress another thinks that that person she/he is trying to impress is important, she/he admires that person. They gain the feeling of importance if they get to impress that person and he/she's self esteem rises in a very suprising way.

If you suck at sports, trying to make people feel dumber than you because you learned some words out of the dictionary always makes for good times.
