Hey listen to the first answer (sorry but the second guy has no clue). I use to work in an airport, and in the cargo section of the plane. Pets are not given any special treatment what so ever, the cage is treated just like any other bag. Some guys like myself, would try their best to put a dog carrier in the best place in the cargo area. Trust me it get cold in there, no matter what season it is. But it is very hard when you have 300 bags coming at you and you only have 30 minutes to finish packing. And the plane crew screaming at you to hurry up.

Please believe me on one thing - Dogs & Cats should never go on a plane. The high pitch noise from the engines alone are deafening to them. If you need to have your pet transported, Have them on the ground in a car.

I agree with the first answer also. I used to be a travel agent and I would never send my animals by air cargo in the plane. I have traveled with a cat that I brought on board and had to sit under the seat in a tiny cramped cage. I hated it, but I was moving from Hawaii to the states and had no choice. I'd rather them be in the plane than in cargo.

They say it is extrememly cold while flying and then sitting on the ground they can get extremely hot. Not to mention the ones that escape when being taken off the plane and never found again.

Certain airlines, like Southwest, will not even consider flying with pets, because of the extreme temperatures is what I was told.

They are in the cargo hold of the plane and are exposed to heat extremes such as heat in the summer and cold in the winter. They can get tossed around. I have heard of abuse by baggage handlers. There s no way I would ever ship an animal on a plane.

I think pets are transported in a cozy portable kennels where the pet feels very comfortable. However, he might feel uneasy after long flights as they dont have a chance to walk around. As pets are in the baggage compartments on the flights, he may feel lonely and borred...this is my understanding. if the pet is too small, you can carry them on your lap.

It is frightening, and sometimes tramatizing. Cats tend to do better than dogs. We had our lab flown in when I was a kid and we moved to AK. The dog freaked out and became viscious. We could not approach him or let him out until the next day.
