Second one is appropriate, grammatically when there exists only one system, Whole.
First one is appropriate, grammatically when there exist different systems.
This depends upon the condition in which you are talking.

Eg. Earth is a planet and place where living things occur in solar family.
Earth is a planet and a dwelling place of living things in the Milky way galaxy.

I would say 1 is more correct because it better separates 'part and whole' by giving them both an 'a' in front of them. This way it explains that they are both something different.

It's not easy explaining why things are in your mother tongue. It's often a feeling of what is right and not always a rule or good explanation can be produced. I feel 1 is better. Good luck.

It depends on what you're trying to say.

#1 means you are both a part of a whole and a separate whole yourself. #2 means you are a part of something and you are whole, as in you are not broken into pieces.

You probably want #1.
