We are told that "junk" is "food".
It holds very little nutritional value, so even after the face is stuffed, the stomach still feels unsatisfied. An additive in many foods today actually has this explicit purpose... monosodium glutamate (MSG). It is added to food as if it was salt, to "enhance flavour". What it actually does is irritate the taste buds, so they recieve more information and the food is "tasted" more without being more flavourful in actuality. Then, it irritates the stomach lining so it still feels hungry even after it is full. It is added to all kinds of sauces and seasonings - read the labels.
Snack foods have especially high concentrations of MSG - Doritos? They are practically MADE of monosodium glutamate.
The history of global commerce is the story of the spice trade. Spices are still an expensive commodity, and if food manufacturers can use less in any way, they will do it. At your grocery store, compare the prices of imitation vanilla and pure vanilla extract, and you will see what I mean. Starbucks adds "coffee flavour" to their coffee, so they can use less coffee while still selling a beverage that tastes more like coffee than anyone else's. Really! Coffee-flavoured coffee.
It might not be will and purpose so much as misinformation and ignorance... People need to start paying attention to what they are putting into their bodies.
Garbage in, garbage out...

Too many large meals, especially fast food. Soda instead of water and not enough exercise. TV, computers, and video games are more popular than health clubs.

We Americans have too much available to us, and we want it all! I live in Northern California and there aren't very many obese people in my town.
