If you are going to travel quite a bit in a relatively short time, it might be a good idea to invest in a Japan Rail Pass. It offers you unlimited travel on the largest/most extensive rail system in Japan (JR) for limited times (1-2 weeks I think). Otherwise, fare prices from city to city are hard (but not impossible) to find in English.

If you take two or three longish train rides, you will come out ahead as far as the pass cost is concerned. My parents used it when they came to visit (I live in Japan). Hope it helps.

Here are a few sites that might help.

The fares are listed in timetables that are published by Japan Rail, but I don't know how to get those outside Japan. If you want a ticket a little bit cheaper than list price go to the ticket shops near major stations.

If you are traveling from America I believe it will save you a couple hundred dollars to buy the rail pass here in America. My sister-inlaw just went back to Japan to visit family and that is what she does. It is much cheaper as she goes back and forth between Tokyo and Hiroshima. Good luck.
