People create demand for resources.
More people More demand.
We have moved into a technological time in our existence.
We need more power, more gasoline, more travel vehicles.
More food, more packaging. More clothing, more shoes, more of everything.
We can't go back. The only way back is to be forced back. A catastrophe. A great war, a plague, something that will remove a lot of people. Less people, less demand. Less demand, less pollution, less draw on the resources.

basically because we are stupid and selfish
having kids is selfish and yet it is the most obvious destructive thing that a person can do becuase you have created another consumer to rape the resources of the planet and will demand housing and food... etc
we are greedy and want to have things - even dumb things we dont need - like cell phones, disposable razors and 100 pairs of shoes

but yeah, that's a good Q
Because of alot of reasons ... but poeple need to wake up and get this done b4 it's too late ...
but there's alot of reasons as to why their not doing anything (or much at all)
I'm too lazy to list them all it would be like writing a paper LOL
I don't feel like writing a paper right now...
(I might type it all up later)
