He was playing around (after watching that "do it like Zidane" clip @ youtube) and head-butted me for real. It hurt! I got mad and walked away even though he apologized. I know he didn't mean to hurt me, but now there is weirdness between us. What should I do, head-butt him back? How do you "equalize" someone's stupidity?

Next time you & he are hanging with another co-worker, tell a story about how YOU did something really stupid to someone once, and then felt like an idiot, but the person you did it to forgave you. It will break the tension, and let him know that you are not really still mad at him without you actually having to make a direct move, thus you save face, and so does he. This worked for my husband, it's a standard "guy" maneuver. You kinda talk about the (gulp) relationship problem, but not really.

Did he really mean it when he apologized? That is the question you need to find out. It's hard to trust people, you know. If I were you, I'd just leave him alone. Well, I don't know. I'm a type of a person who cannot forgive people easily, esp. if he has done a big stupid mistake like head-butting. Why are people so DUMB for doing that without any reason at all? That's stupidity! I can't forgive a man like that, even if he apologizes.

First of all, "take the high road"; don't stoop to his level. If you think you have been injured, and it happened on the job, you should report this to your employer. It might be helpful to talk privately with this co-worker and calmly explain to him that what happened physically hurt you and that you were also very offended, just to make sure he understands that what he did was wrong and offensive. If he does anything else aggressive, or even just gives you a dirty look, report him immediately to your management and/or HR representative. In the US, such aggression can constitute a form of workplace harrassment if it continues to affect your ability to work. You have a right to have a work environment where you are treated with dignity.

Hey you and I must have the same co-worker ;-) I would just ignore it since he apologized and admitted that he or she was stupid. If it happens again though I'd talk to the "boss" and get a little equalization that way!

actually it was really stupid on his part for two reasons. one is he could have injured you seriously and the other is its considered assault and battery and he can go to jail for doing it. doesn't have much common sense it seems.
