Although they are 1 company, HP is perceived as better quality than Compaq. Am not sure if they use the same parts in the processing line.... but HP offers better after sale service and a proven quality product.
I'd think you should go for HP - it's worth paying a little more (vs Compaq) for a reliable product.
Good luck.

HP has a better reputation regarding better customer service and more innovative computers. I guess in a way, HP is the high end of the HP-Compaq group. Its like Toyota and Lexus. Both are Toyota-owned and have vehicles that have the same frame (ie. Toyota Camery and the Lexus LS series), but Lexus has more cool stuff and is more expensive. Compaq though, does deliver a good product, and would be a good choice for the money

I use a Compaq Presario with HP printers. I have no problems with either. The Compaq actually came with a HP printer when I bought it 2 years ago at Sam's Club. From what I understand, is that getting generic (non HP peripherals) doesn't work. Only HP for HP. Thereby the expense. However, the printers are reasonable and are the best choice.

It depends on how much money you will be saving. This is my second compaq computer, I still have the one I bought in 2000, with windows 98se on it. I really don't do any high end gaming, or graphics or anything fancy, I just send emails, and cruise the internet. I have all the usual stuff, google earth, picasa, and all the normal programs, I guess you would say. I bought them, because of the price, each was under $500.00, with a 17 inch LCD monitor, with my new one. If all you do, is surf, and emails..etc, the compaq, has served me well. I have a cable modem, and it sure does go pretty fast.. It's a personnal preference, and I like to save money..good luck, in whichever one, that you buy...

HP is generally designed for higher demand users, but it depends on the specific models you compare.
If you are going to do a lot with digital video or gaming, I'd personally recommend HP because it's easier to find more powerful HP models. HP and Compaq are roughly the same company, but the models of computers vary widely so do your research and know your needs and wants before you buy. Using the websites to compare models side by side will help you a lot.

weather you buy compaq or HP your getting the same parts. all your paying for is a stupid name. Compaq and HP are one in the same company, just set up like that so they can make more money and its not considered a monopoly.

Same company, same Computer. Have one built by a professional local company who can build a better computer for less most of the time.
