In my experience, mostly on the west coast, it really depends on where you are located. If you live say in a town of 100,000 people, it's easier to find guys that are godd. In large towns half a million or bigger, there's too much competition and unions to try to compete with, in smaller towns, it seems all the good ones have good jobs. My sister and I run a couple of businesses, and we put employess through a long 'test' period, 3 months usually, and we let them know exactly what they can make if they are dependable, honest, and are good at their job. We don't have automatic raises, but if they prove to qualify, we do things like pay them a 'bonus' when things are going well. That way it's no guarantee, but we pay them often. You also could offer a really dependable, honest one a percentage of your net after a year or something to that effect. Good luck.

You expect people to work on construction jobs where, if they get hurt, the company doesn't give them medical benefits? And you expect them to be good workers?

The only people willing to work for a construction company which won't pay their hospital bills if they get run over by a company truck are those who are truly desperate, and chances are, they're not the caliber of employee you're seeking.

Your best bet is to get day laborers from street corners who are just looking for enough money to pay for food or booze.

You could also try temporary agencies -- they pay their employees' benefits for you, but they're not cheap.

while benefits are nice a lot of people just want to be treated fair and honestly...tell them what your plans are if you hope to have bens. in the future...then if you have a guy get sick if you see he could use some money to go to dr or buy meds loan it to him and make him feel like one of the family....i worked for a man for several years that didnt have benefits and didnt pay as much as some companys but me and his other employees stayed because we liked the way we were treated
