First of all, you need to be aware the capitalization is extremely important when discussing megabytes and gigabytes.
a lower case b indicates bits instead of bytes (8 bits to a byte).
a lower case m means milli (1/1000) rather than mega ( 1 million)
a lower case g is meaningless.
When discussing hard drives and flash memory, the conversion rate is usually 1000 MB to 1 GB.
When discussing RAM, the conversion rate is 1024 MB to 1 GB.
The discrepency stems from two points. First, 1024 is based on being a multiple of 2 (2^10) and was chosen because it was close to 1000 which is would follow the ISO measurement standards.
The 1000 MB = 1 GB conversion rate was used for hard drives as part of a marketing ploy. Companies could artificially inflate the size of the drives since they are calculating 1 kB = 1000 bytes instead of 1024. So instead of saying a hard drive had 50 MMB, they'd say it had 52.4 MB.
