I turn up my TV so I can hear the program, then a commercial comes on, and the volume seems to increase tenfold !!! Way too loud for me, and I wind up turning it down again. Then my program comes back on, and I can't hear it. So, I have to turn up the volume again. Why do they do this???

That's a good question. I mean, seriously, do they think we need their product that badly that we have to be subjected to possible hearing loss over it. And on another note, have you ever noticed how sometimes you can't hear one channel, but you can change it and it cvould break the sound barrior? What's up with that???

The other answers are right as far as they go, but there's a bit more to it:

Everything on TV falls within the same overall range of volume, which we'll just simplify to a level of 0 - 10. When you're watching CSI, they save the '10' volume for the gunshots, so normal conversations occur at a lower volume, and whispers are even lower. That's the way drama is, and the touching parts would be less poignant if they happened at the same volume as gunshots.

Commercials, on the other hand, have one objective, and it can all take place at the same volume as far as they're concerned. So, why would they make their commercial at a '3' volume when they can just as easily use '10' for the whole thing?

There is also some technology involved in compressing everything into a narrower range of volume, but ultimately, commercials just don't have to save dynamic range for the gunshots & explosions, so they don't.

Most people leave the room during commercials to get a drink, snack, use the restroom, etc. They turn up the volume to keep you engaged with the tv.

Advertizers do this for several reasons, which can be divided into two catagories, technical and psychological. When something is louder it tends to get your attention. Also the audio is recorded at a compressed level to maintain maximum modulation of the audio signal throughout the comercial whereas regular programs have the maximum modulation at the climaxes of the show,

Very simply...to get you. When the volume goes up, it grabs your attention, and you look. It also causes you to stop daydreaming and get the remote. Or, simply, it makes it more possible for you to hear their message.

That is so you can hear the commercial while your head is in the refrigerator getting a snack.

It's worse when you can't find the remote fast enough. I can't stand the tv screaming at me either. P.s. your picture is very pretty.
