I can't take the kids, there's no one to watch them.
I have alot to do that day.
I want to stay at home with my husband.
I'm not really good at that.
I am not really feeling well.
I had already made other plans.
These are all not lies. There are exaggerated truths. lol

i used to give excuses but like for the last 10 yrs or so i just tell the truth and if they dont like it too bad

Don't have the free time. most favors are asked during my working hours, and can't wait till later.

If I don't want to do something I don't do it, and I tell them I don't want to do that. if I offer to do someone a favor then I follow through.

i don't have an excuse, i just tell them that i don't want to or i can't. Just say the real reason, don't have an excuse

If I don't want to do it or if I don't have the time I just tell them honestly! If your friendship is valued on a basis of what you can do for them it's not a real friendship!

when i think someone is taking advantage of me, or trying to pressure me, i keep it VERY simple.
"I'm sorry, i can't do that."
or
"I'm, sorry, that isn't possible."
don't elaborate, don't explain, don't negotiate.
If they persist, after i say NO 3 times, i tell them that. "i have said "no" 3 times, and you are not hearing me or respecting me. Why is that?"
