In the USA we are taught there are 7 continents on the Earth. These are North America, South America, Africa, Asia, Australia, Europe, and Antarctica.
I have friends from the UK, Peru, and Tunisia, and they were all taught in school that there are only 5 continents.
They are taught that the only continents are Africa, Asia, Australia, Europe, and America (includes both North and South America

If the definition of a Continent the worlds largest land masses than I would have to say 5. Because South and North America are 1 land mass, and Asia and Europe are 1 land mass. Although the Panama Canal separates North and South America so I could even say 6, even though I know the Canadian Atlas says 7. Canada

Hmmmm.........Amazing since I'm married to a Tunisian, I'm living in Tunisia and am around his friends and family, and they all told me there are 7 continents. I think you should take Tunisia off your list. That might have been something that was taught a while ago and in the poor country sides, but not in the mainstream.

I agree with you . Antartica (and the North Pole) are sparsely populated because of artic temperatures and the inability to do farming there. That may be why some do not consider Antartica to be a "continent".

If I had to guess 5, it would have been America (N & S), Eurasia (Europe & Asia together), Africa, Australia, and Antarctica.
