Its called a firewall, its not perfect, but its better than nothing.
The one I currently use right now is Filseclab and you can download and use it for free from http://www.download.com/
Running a firewall will prevent unauthorized programs from accessing your computer through network connections.

Turn off all shared folders
Use the firewall of win xp ( if you have it)
or use some other alternative like zonealarm.
Some of these offer free versions for home use
