As an Italo-Australian I had two teams in the world cup :-) My feeling are mixed.
Australia played very very well and were unlucky not to beat Italy. The last few minutes of the game were gut wrenching and dissapointing. I had thought that having two teams play each I would feel good after the game. But Italy dissapointed and I did not feel that they played well enough to win the world cup. (I was however glad to be proven wrong)
Italy played poorly at the early stages but came good in a spectacular way :-)
I was satisfied by both teams except for Italy against Australia.
Italy played to win the cup. Starting slow and finishing well.
Both Italy and Australia will qualify in 2010. (And for good measure Juventus will win the Serie A)

Well, you know that I'm an Italian fan, so I must say I'm satisfied with the result! ;-)
I do think, however, that they could have played better sometimes -- especially that aweful match vs the USA, or even the one vs Australia. I guess the red cards influenced those games and the way they played. They didn't really try to score more goals because they had to defend more, especially against Australia.
I'm aware that many soccer fans don't like defensive style. I personally don't have a problem with it, but it doesn't have to do with the fact that Italy, my team, has always been a traditionally defensive team. The World Cup is a major international sporting event where whole nations are supporting their teams, so the teams go there determined to go all the way and make their fans happy and proud of them. If playing defense is effective, why not? It would be totally pointless to play a beautiful, exciting, and entertaining game just to please the eyes of the audience, and then lose, and let your fans down.
And yeah, of course Italy will qualify for 2010 ;-)

1. I'm Italian - and very happy, of course.
2. - 3. More than satisfied: Italy won the WC having injured players (Nesta - Zambrotta, Camoranesi, Gattuso with lesser injuries), De Rossi banned for 4 match, Materazzi send off by a referee's mistake, poorly permorming players as Totti and Del Piero.
Lippi was forced to switch to a more defensive (and unimpressive) 4-4-1-1.
Football scandal, network pressure, injuries and tactical changes weren't enough to stop Italy! I guess winning this cup was more difficult than '82 one.
3. Of course they could. With his usual 4-3-1-2 Lippi had some highly impressive match in 2006, as Holland 3-1and Germany 4-1 on March.
4. Yes. Now Donadoni has the needed time span to rebuilt the team with younger player. Football scandal and club relegations in lesser championship as 'serie B' will help the coach, because those clubs are forced to sell foreign champions and launch in the field their own youngsters. 2008 UEFA championship preliminaries will be the best test to rate a new, younger Italy. I guess the team will be ready for a great 2010 WC.

I was so happy that Italy won. I couldn't believe it in the end. It all seemed like a dream, a summer's night dream. I haven't seen Italy winning something before so it was great, after the disappointment of the 1998 and 2002 WC and the loss in the final of the European in 2000. Now Italy has to think about qualifying. It will be hard especially because we have to face again France and Ukraine, but I think we will qualify.

I was extremely disappointed and sad that Germany didn't win. They played great and fair, and deserved the World Cup. This World Cup sucked, some teams just got lucky. Like how Portugal beat England, and Italy beat Germany. I wanted to see England either in the final or third, and I wanted to see Germany win the whole thing, and France come second or third. So it was disappointing. Hopefully, 2010 will be much better.

i support ENGLAND ever since i am a football fans 16 years ago, overall i fell disappointed for their forwards especially the surprise of Theo Walcott, if Sven has selected him, why wasn't he gets a match?? Darren Bent, Jermaine Defoe, Andy Johnson, why wasn't Sven pick them instead??
from their first match, their performances was not up to the mark, some of the player who were brilliant for their clubs simply did not perform. Frank Lampard, for example: he has more shots on target, yet no goals to show.
the formations that was used especially after the injury to Michael Owen has left many fans fuming. why opt for 4-5-1 instead of usual 4-4-2 where the squad is already short of strikers. poor Wayne Rooney, leaving him up front on his own!!
the quarter-final match was simply disappointing, i personally did not blame Wayne Rooney for his dismissal, but the red card given to him was just too harsh!! ENGLAND's plan were subsequently ruined after that, they lost the plot & when the lottery of penalties looming, they simply have no answer. perhaps they should practice more on penalty kicks.
finally, i think the team should have gone far, at least the semi-finals but i didn't work out. i hope they will qualify for the next world cup.

im sad that argentina lost in penalty kicks. i think it had alot to do with the injury of the main goalie and the poor decisions made by peckerman to take out riquelme and crespo at practically the same time. i was disappointed when they played against mexico because i thought that they didnt play well but they won either way (which was definitely good). however, i was more disappointed when they lost to germany because they played a phenomenal game.
the problem with argentina is that the coaching was bad this year which caused the team to be really inconsistent. there were plently of great players but peckerman didnt have them out all the time.
in 2010 with a new coach, not only will they qualify, but i think they have a great chance of making it till the end.

I was rooting for Italy and Portugal. I am thrilled to see that Italy beat those damn French, but I would've liked to seen Portugal and Italy matched up in the end. That would've been quite interesting. While Italy played flawlessly throughout the Cup, Portugal totally slacked off against France and ESPECIALLY Germany. It was totally disappointing. I look forward though to seeing Italy and Portugal in 2010!
