First and foremost, do your homework. I researched piercings for a few years on www.bmezine.com . You don't have to take that long in doing it - I'm just an indecisive person. You can look at images for free with a free trial and read user's stories, etc. Make sure it is something you really want. A piercing can close up but don't get if you don't want it.
Make sure the place is clean. The place should be clean, they should have all single-use needles (no piercing guns as they do not get cleaned well-enough), and they should be more than willing to show you how they sterilize everything. If they balk at it, go somewhere else. The piercer should wear gloves and keep everything sterile. Pretend you are in a doctor's office getting a shot - it should be that clean. There is always a risk of infection so do your homework on the proper aftercare and your piercer should be wiling to assist you if you feel there is something wrong. Keep the piercing clean, follow the instructions and you should enjoy it. If you don't like it, the piercer can remove the jewelery for you. It didn't hurt bad at all. I think it was less than getting my ears pierced and it hurt less during healing too. Just be careful with pants! Low-rise only lol
For a navel ring, do not let them use clamps. If they pierce using clamps, go somewhere else. I had one done that way and not only were the clamps extremely painful, they stretched the skin in such a way that the piercing was too tight and crooked. I recently had it redone without clamps. The piercer cna get a feel for your body shape and place the jewelery perfectly. And it hurt a lot less. trust me on this one. Do not use bactine, neosporin or peroxide. Clean twice a day with a mild antibacterial soap and use sea salt for soothing and rinsing. Good luck.
If you have other questions or want to know more aboiut my experiences, feel free to email or IM me on Yahoo. Same screenname.

I can only speak for myself, but mine didn't. It was pretty quick and hurt for only a split second. No local anesthetic applied, just a straight up piercing. Any piercing comes with a risk of infection. Keep it clean and follow the aftercare instructions you are given and you should be just fine. I washed the area every day with anti-bacterial soap and applied an antibacterial ointment afterwards for the first 30 days. I had no infection or even mild discomfort. As has been said though, you must keep the area clean and care for the piercing properly. If you seem to be developing any redness or irritation afterwards, see your physician ASAP. I have had mine pierced for almost 10 years trouble free.
Always go to a reputable establishment for piercings. I insist that this goes a long way towards lessening the potential for infections of new piercings. I loved the guy who did mine. He was careful, clean, showed me each item as he opened it so I could see it was new. The most important part is, he explained the procedure and aftercare thoroughly and the establishment would not pierce unless you ponied up for the aftercare kit (it was included in the cost). They also provided a detailed booklet for aftercare for those who were apt to forget the instructions.

It doesn't hurt as much as some (ie cartlidge or nipples etc), about as much as an earlobe, only its not done with a gun so its really not that bad. It can get infected like any other piercings.

For me - the actual PIERCING part wasn't that bad - but the clamp was a killer. Mine bled a tiny bit, and it was a bit sore, but I've had it for 2 years and never had any trouble with it *knock on wood*
Good luck x
