It is a bad name that was given to little black boys back in slave days. They would sit on the porch and wait for their master to either come or go. That way they could help carry bags, take hat and coat, bring water to guests, hall wood to the house, take the horses to the stables, etc.
Today, it still refers to people of color who just sit on th porch and watch life go by. It is a terribly negative term....don't use it.

It is a derogatory term used by morons to describe a small statue that used to sit by people front porches. It was a young black man(presumably a slave) with an up held arm where you would tie your horse when you came to visit.

I don't know if this is the real meaning (I certainly hope it isn't), but my redneck brother in law uses it as a really ugly way to refer to southern black people....not a nice thing to say at all
