I think the same ppl who watched Sex in the City (the 40-something mid-life crisis women) have moved on from that to this. Don't know what they see in either of the shows, other than perhaps they have low self-esteem and are "desperately" looking for role models. The other ppl who watch it have just been dumbed down by American television over the past 10-20 yrs. In another 10 yrs most of us will be excited to watch an hour of flashing colours and lights.

First of all, I think that saying America as a whole is intellectually bankrupt is an overgeneralization. Much of what is broadcast may be lacking in substance, but not everyone is actually watching these shows. "Desperate Housewives" has high ratings because it is escapist television. Like the soap operas that have come before it, the show is a guilty pleasure that people enjoy because it's so different from their own lives. The bottom line is that no one has to watch shows like "Desperate Housewives" if they find them intellectually offensive. The television does come with an "off" button.

Why is this your concern?
I watch the show. I also watch a couple of soap operas, drama shows such as "Boston Legal" and "24", certain "reality" shows. And you can also find me watching the History channel, National Geographic, Discovery and Learning channels.
I read extensively. Any genre....I just have to find it interesting. Whether it be the comics, a biography, science fiction or something else.
Everything does not have to, or need to be, intellectually stimulating! How about doing something for the simple enjoyment of it. It makes life much more pleasant.
Quit worrying so much about what others are doing (or watching), and tend to your own affairs.

Finally I meet someone who shares the same view of this show! I was beginning to think I was an alien. Everyone watches this show and I can not for the life of me understand why? It is a soap opera people shown at night. Oh gone are the days of Frasier, an interesting and intelligent show (the first five or so years). Hopefully it will run its course by year five, hopefully...

People have been force fed on bullshit from Hollywood for years. It's what they are used to, happy with, and it's too much effort to try to understand something with a bit more substance.
