To prolong the life of their clothing by keeping sweat and various other stain makers from soiling your clothes from the inside. Think of it as a reverse bib.

I believe the tradition started way back when, when people didn't have washing machines and had fewer clothes to begin with and therefore by wearing undergarmants, they could wear their clothes multiple times without washing (and before you wince - you know we all did it in college... a.k.a. "the smell check") Thus they were able to prolong the life of their meager wardrobe and wash them too many times.
