I've heard a lot of arguments against gay marraige, specifically from the religious point of view. Since our nation values the separation of church and state, it seems obvious that we should listen to proclamations by Pat Robertson when it comes to forming contract laws between two people. After all, should we prevent athiests from getting married since they don't believe in god, which I guess could be construed as an even greater sin than being 'gay'.
The only sensible argument that I have heard is that America has voted against gay marriage; only the courts have interepted state constitutions to mean that gays can marry due to equality clauses. So, why should the courts have the right to freely interpret laws? If we are going to adopt gay marriage as a part of our Americana, shouldn't we, as a nation, ratify it through a democratic vote?
While I do agree with some of those points, there have been times in our nation's history where slavery was popular and accepted. Further, women did not have the right to vote. Yet, both those notions seem ridiculous when it comes to modern day society. So at times we haven't been too 'democratic' or actually believed in 'liberty'. Mostly, we've used the political system to discriminate against others that we do not agree with. We've used the political system as a weapon against liberty. But in time we all chill out and figure out how to lighten up. There will be gay marraige in a few years and we will all be better off for it. It's scary to a lot of straights because they feel as if they don't have control over society. Just like all the white people were afraid of giving black people freedom...
Keep on fighting and the gays will overcome. This straight dude will vote for you every time!

I think it's a lot like racism. When I was in college I had an encounter with the Klan. They were so willing to accept the idea that they were better than people of other races or religions or whatever because as individuals they were losers. When you don't have anything going for you the idea that you are automatically superior to someone else just because of some characteristic you wore born with, or because of some affiliation that you can change at a moment's notice is pretty attractive.
So if you are straight but otherwise a loser you can elevate your status instantly by looking down on gays.
A similar phemonem is this idea that the Christians are into where the revel in the idea that they'll be carted off to heaven while the "non believers" stay here and get punished.
It's all a case of "I don't feel very good about myself but it helps if I can look down on you".

I am straight and I am a christian and I have no Problem what so ever with gay marriage. Times have changed and I personally feel that you can choose your hair color, the size of your butt, the type of car you drive and the PERSON YOU WANT TO SPEND YOUR LIFE WITH. Doesn't matter what sex they are, if they are happy together that is all that matters..............
For all those people that have the church reasons on why gays shouldn't be married....think about this.....Are you, or your family, or friends divorced......cause guess what that is "Wrong" as well within the church......
Sorry my answer is so long, but this is how I feel. Take Care

Because then you give them rights that they shouldn't have that are much deeper than marriage. How can you let gay couples adopt children? Ther weren't meant to have children genetically, and you defy science and natural selection by allowing them to adopt. They end up imposing their life style, beliefs, and atitude onto a child. Most likely, that child will be harassed by other kids, and will live a horrible life, and turn out to be gay. The thing with marriage rights is that it opens doors down the line that shouldn't be opened. It's the foot in the door phenomenon. They ask for small things first, and then it becomes increasingly harder to say no to them the next time around!

People are always afraid of what they don't understand. I used to live in NY, near Fire Island. Knew lots of Gays, both male & female, they're just like everyone else. They want true love and a home, all that same stuff we want. I'm straight, some of my best 'girlfriends' have been gay men, they never 'went after' my husband or boys. I think if more people broadened their horizons and actually spoke to some gay people, they'd change their minds. Besides, from a morality point of view, you would think the religious people would prefer committed monogamous gays to single promiscuous gays.
Go figure; I don't understand people, really.

I don't understand that fully myself. I think gay marriage is a wonderful thing that should be legalized everywhere. I personally am straight but I hve gay friends. I think the people who don't like gay marriage are too judgemental and need to loosen up a little bit.

It isn't scary to straights. Straights don't care what a gay guy does. Thnk about it. What the hell would I care if a gay guy marries another gay guy ?? So what ?? What is there for me to be afraid of ??
I think gays and polititians make a bigger deal out of this than there should be.
If two gay women want to get married, I say HELL YES !!! I want to be invited to the wedding and the honeymoon. I'll take the pictures...

Not counting the religion / traditional values, Morales of it, I think it scares people to think that perhaps it could be a lifestyle choice. I don't personally believe that but if it were you could then be afraid that by accepting it your condoning it & perhaps propetuating the situation.
I dont like the idea that if gay marriage is government sactioned that it would most likely "create" a legally recognised "new" minority group. Then we all get to suffer the rules & conducts on a whole new can of worms.

Not matter of being scared of it or anything like that.
Gay is directly said in the Bible to be wrong. That is what we stand on. If gay was like a bug trust me we would squash it.
Gay is just confusion due to lack of attention and such as a child. We as humans are nothing more than a mammal or animal. Do you see other animals being gay? No...that alone proves it is a mental illness and not a true issue.
