I'm not sure of the exact scenario. Are you saying that he put her in the box BEFORE presenting her to you? If this is the case and he told you that she would be "stressed" if you open the box, that is what you should say when you return the hamster. Sounds like he might have been trying to give you a snow job - especially with that "no return" policy. If for some reason he made it impossible for you to check the gender, you have every right to return the animal and ask for your money back. If they refuse, you can call the Better Business Bureau and file a complaint. They might be able to get you money back or force them to exchange the hamster for a female.

Well if you can't return it, for better or worse you got a male hamster on your hands. If you don't want him, try if someone you know wants a hamster and try to give the poor thing a good home. And if still you are going to buy another female hamster. Ask the clerk to show you the hamster to see what gender (remember you have the right to this) before you pay. But you know that policy sounds fishy, talk to the owner if you can return the hamster and explain what happened.

Did you speak to the manager? If so, then speak to that manager's manager -- because the store made a mistake -- NOT you. They should allow you to return the hamster under those circumstances. If they won't, then ask them to see their business license (they are required to display one somewhere in the store by law) so that you can document their license number and info for the purpose of reporting them to the Better Business Bureau, and also quote whichever Bureau permits pet shop licenses in your state (for example, in Massachuessets it's the Bureau of Animal Health; in Nebraska, it's the Bureau of Animal Industry). Make sure the manager is present when you threaten to report them to these Bureaus and write down the business license information, and you're certain to get your hamster exchanged pronto by the manager!!! This has worked like a charm for me in other situations before.

If by some tiny chance, however, the manager is an idiot and still won't let you exchange him, then please learn to love the little hamster, and definitely report the store to the BBB and your state's pet store licensing bureau anyway. Send a duplicate copy to the store manager just to rub it in that you reported them. Contact your local paper to put a small article in the paper about it. And boycot the store by putting signs in your car windows and making a t-shirt that you wear in the store (haha, it works!) saying something like, "If you want a pet, DON'T GO TO ABC PET STORE.... Lies. Incompetence. Poor business practices." It is not slander if it's true, and you have a real-life experience to validate that truth if asked.

The man gave you the wrong information, just tell them that. Take him in, explain that you understand the store policy but say that you specifically asked for female and its a male. They have to swap it because it was their fault. See how you go, if they dont let you, then at least you tried.

yes you can return him, policy or no, he was obligated to sell you what you asked for, but at least to not use trickery to make a sale. i would try to return him but if you cannot, complain to the manager. if that does not work, make a little noise in front of customers, not enough to get arrested or anything, but talk in front of customers about what happened. rather than lose customers because of the bad publicity, they will either exchange for female hamsters, or give your money back.

If you need a girl that badly go yell at the man. He probably lied to u cuz he wanted to sell the hamster. If your not desperate for a girl try to love the guy. (hamster)

if it was a cambels dwarf aka russian dwarf, feel blessed. i breed them and i also work at a petstore, the females are usually nippy and mean the boys are usually better tempered, of course this is all realitive to how much they were handled from 4weeks and up.

You should try first to take the pet back to the store and if that does not work, then you should sue him in small claims court. Even if you don't win the publicity will have him think twice before he does something like that again.......
