You get what you pay for...you can't expect to buy a car, spend next to nothing to maintain it, and have it run forever. Some late model Volvos can be maintenance-heavy, but with the proper care they can get up to 200,000 miles with no problem at all. My mother has a 1991 Volvo 240 that's still going strong with no signs at all of stopping. I have a 1993 940 with over 140,000 miles that is working just as well.
I'm not sure about the longevity of Volvos produced after Ford acquired Volvo's car division. I would reccomend looking for a used pre-Ford Volvo.
In case it wasn't obvious, I would personally reccomend buying a Volvo, but be careful buying them used. Many owners do not give them the proper care, and this can cause problems later on.

Same car.
Cost factor the Mazda3 will be cheaper to maintain as you will not have the higher Volvo basic service labor rate and Volvo part prices.

Mazda is certainly will be cheaper to maintain and will last longer.
Volvo is very good car to drive, but "cheap maintenance" is not about Volvo cars
