After "Scent of a Woman", it seems like Al Pacino plays "Carlito" in every role. Were his performances deeper in the days of "The Godfather" & "Dog Day Afternoon"? Or is the "new Pacino" a better star in the cinema firmament?

He's great before but I think his roles have improved with age.

I've never been a big Al Pacino fan but I definatly think he was a better actor before. I like Scent of a Woman but if you watch Scarface or Dog Day Afternoon or even Nighthawks next to something like Heat or Carlito's Way, he doesn't have the intensity and vibrance he use to. Those characters have a rawness and ferocity to them that he seems to have lost in his later years. Yeah, he's more mature and perhaps polished but I think it's also allowed him to hide behind the craft and not explore and experience the characters he portrayed as deeply or as intensely.

I believe his best role to date was Dog Day afternoon. He gave a killer performance in that movie. He is absolutely talented but you are right. I believe a handful of other actors such as Dustin Hoffman, Robert Redford and especially Robert De Niro have not given amazing performances of late. I think it is the projects that are being made, not the actors themselves. The best movies ever made were in the 1970s. The list is endless.

"And Justice for All" was Pacino's last good movie. Of course, I'm not including "Scarface." Everything he did after were Pacino vehicles, and he became a real MOVIE STAR, the jerk.

I prefer the more mature Pacino. He's amazing. But I may be partial...Scent of a Woman is one of my favorite movies.

For me,the best Pacino movies are "The Godfather" and "Serpico", anything after "Scarface" is questionable.

I loved him in the Merchant of Venice, you can feel him crumbling at the end of the movie...it was so powerful.
I haven't seem many of his earlier films but I think his performances have gotten better over the years.

Yes, he was much better pre-hoo ha. I enjoy everything he did prior to scent of a woman, but he has seemed to narrow his range.

He was a GREAT Shylock...understated and nuanced.
His earlier stuff tends to be "scenery chewing" scream fests (And Justice For All)
