Due to the recent heat wave, we've decided to install a swamp cooler (probably in our attic). Our house is almost 100 years old. We wanted to get a feel for the cost of a swamp cooler, before calling any contractors.

It might be best to install the swamp cooler on the lower floor and then install an attic fan, which puts the warm air out the top of your house. In the Colorado area, depending on the size of the house, you are looking at anywhere from $300-$800 for the swamper itself. Don't forget replacement pads, tubing and connections. Make sure to disconnect them and cover your swamper in winter. Your local Home Depot or Lowe's can help.

You are looking at around 12.0 labour time, then you have parts to change over from the old engine to the new one. You will need to source out a used engine with hopefully low kilometers and a good compression ratio. Seriously, your talking thousands of dollars.. If you really like your Saab, which I don’t know why anyone does..., get rid of it and get something else.. -Apprentice mechanic

You need to know the size of the area that you want cooled. I would suggest that you go to Home Depot and speak to them to get ideas on how to estimate the size that you will need, then let them price a unit that will fit your needs. Finally, they will have a list of contractors that they recommend to give you an estimate to install it. Good Luck
