If you are talking about standard of living, than Europe is a little poor than the United States in the fact that they do not collect as much toys as we do. But, they usually have more free time to use the toys that they have so it is even. I was talking to a guy that is from Hanover and he says that both the United States and Europe are highly commercial areas where everyone wants stuff even if they can not afford it.

This is hard to mesaure. Since Europe, I'm assuming you are speaking of the EU, is made up of many countries.
The E.U. was invented to counter the U.S. economic dominance/hegemony, Value of currency could become the next global reserve currency of the future, has the GDP the size of the U.S.’s and 450 million consumers, if OPEC starts using euros instead of dollars to price oil then we are in trouble!
Globalization of EU business is partly a by-product of the economic rigidities and high labor costs that have been so troublesome for manufacturers. Companies could expand only if they pushed their operations outside the corseted economies of core Europe.
The European debate is much nastier than ours because Europe's problems are so much worse. Europe has an asthmatic economy, a civilization crisis brewing over Islam and immigration, an aging and shrinking population, and an anemic military establishment. And its reason for existence — the EU — is adrift without a constitution.

The united states is the richest country followed by Japan and China. The reason they formed the European Union is to compete on the global market.
