V for Vendetta, my personal favorite.

Watchmen was written by Alan Moore after writing most of V. Personally, I think Alan Moore was a better writer when he worked on Watchmen.

Both stories are terrific, but I enjoyed reading Watchmen more. It simply has more characters and more subplots to keep you guessing.

By the way, Watchmen was originally conceived as a story with the Charlton Comics characters DC had purchased. For example, Nite Owl was Blue Beetle, Dr. Manhattan was Captain Atom, and Rorshach was The Question. DC rejected using these characters because they were radically changed (if not dead) by the end.

Watchmen by about a million. V is a good story, but the entire reason to read it is also in Watchmen, with about a dozen others. Watchmen is so profound and complx with intersecting plots, thematic elements, and archetypes, that it is basically a novel in graphic form. A true graphic novel. If a person turned it into a true book, then it would be great, but it would lose that whole "A picture is worth a thousand words" aspect.

I would also say Watchmen was the better read. V for me was like a story about this anti-govt madman intend on anarchy. Watchmen while started off as a 'what if superheroes are real' story quickly become something a whole lot mutli-layered and complex. It read like a superheros book but its definitely not one and there are no real heroes or villians in the book. Just an all-round terrific hellva read.

I would agree that Watchman would survive more re-reads than V.

Watchmen. Moore crafted a story so dense and complex that it holds up to many repeat readings. V for Vendetta is good, but I can't see myself reading it as many times as I would Watchmen.

Watchmen easily. V was a really good story but watchmen changed the way everyone in the comic book world viewed the artform and the heroes themselves. The entire story revolved around the use and misuse of power. and brought to the fore the all too human element in a hero..

Watchmen is better. V for Vendetta was kinda predictable, I thought.

The only problem is that if they ever did a movie version, then a bajillion movie crities would write headlines asking "Who Watches The Watchmen" and think that they were being funny ... and it would take me way too long to go visit every one and slap them.

It's a toss up between the two. I would say both are good for your reading pleasure.
