The Protocols of the Elders of Zion is antisemitic claptrap purporting to expose Judaic rituals used against non-Jews. It's well know to be a hoax, but remains popular among some extremely ignorant people.

The Freemasons belong to a secret brotherhood (or sisterhood) with a shared moral philosophy and commitment to mutual assistance. Unfortunately, they have been associated, as well, with anti-Catholicism and anti-semitism among other antis.

The Masons are a fraternal order and secret society created in the 18th century to spread the ideas of the Enlightenment. They sought to eradicate superstition and hereditary privilege. They have therefore been condemned and persecuted by tyrants both civil and religious since their founding.

The order was the foundation of the American and the French Revolutions. Its members include George Washington (who was Grand Master of the order in Virginia) and the Marquis De Lafayette.

Most American presidents and a majority of all the state governors and congressmen ever elected have been members of the brotherhood.

They are not either anti-Catholic or anti-Semitic.

The Catholic church forbids its adherents to join presumably because joining the brotherhood requires that one swear to keep its secrets and the Catholic church will not permit its members to have secrets from its priests.

Jews are as welcome to join as members of any other religion. There are Masons of every religious conviction.

My husband is a mason, and has been an officer in their lodge. Even though it's mostly a social club now, They have strong principles concerning the treatment of others. Forget the funny uniforms--they believe (see if this sounds familliar) all men are equal, regardless of social standing. They do require a belief in a higher being, but they are not a religious organization--whatever your religion, you are welcome. They have codes of conduct, and I know of one man who was expelled for failing to repay debts. My husband vehemently denies that they are a "secret society." He says they are a "society with secrets," and just because they have secret handshakes and some ceremonies are secret, that doesn't make them bad. (I've heard him practicing some of them, and I never heard anything I wouldn't repeat in public.)
