No way. He is living in a fantasy world. By the sounds of it he may be a Vietnam War vet. Politely tell him you can't fulfill your duties and must resign because of urgent family matters. But be gentle and do not argue with him. Just make the statement and leave.

I've got a better idea; call the hospital or the nearest shrink and tell them they've got a patient waiting for them. Poor fellow obviously does not have all his marbles with him and, if you're seriously considering believing him, well I know the name of a good shrink for you.
