About 3 weeks ago I was working outside painting my house. It was about 9:45 in the am on a sunny, clear, cloudless morning.I was standing on a ladder, when I caught a glimpse of something in the sky.I turned around on the ladder so I was facing it.I had a perfect view since I was above everything. At first I thought it was an commercial jet, then looking closer I realized it had absolutely no airfoils of any type! No wings,no tail,no rudder. It was cigar shaped, about the size of a DC9.It must of been made of something metallic because the sun was being reflected off of it.It made no sound whatsoever, neither was there any sign of an engine or jet exhaust.Just then it disappeared behind my neighbor's tall pine trees and since it was flying so low(I est.1500 to 2000 ft)I fully expected to see it when it cleared those trees.I came down the ladder as fast as I could and ran around to the other side but it had vanished. It could not have been more than 5 seconds. Please tell me what was it?

Well, you don't know what it was, which makes it by
definition, an unidentified flying object (UFO).

The vast majority of UFOs have perfectly terrestrial
explainations but some small minority are never explained.

Perhaps some number of those that are not explained
are caused by non terrestrial persons in spaceships
but who can know, right?

I'd point out a few strange things about your description,
however:

1: An object moving that fast within Earth's atmosphere
would emit a sound: A sonic boom. Anything displacing
air would do this. Therefore, what you saw could not
have left your field of view AND displaced air at the
same time.

2: It is very hard to estimate something's size, particularly
in the air, if it doesn't have other objects around it
with which you can gage it. How do you tell if something
is very small and close to you or huge and far away?

Many people experiencing such things never get any clear
explanation. You will not be able to explain everything in
your life anyways. Why should this be any different?

Rather than the old UFO theory, how about a blimp? You know, a dirigeable. Although they don`t really go that fast. Maybe because it was, as you say, flying pretty low, it could have disappeared over the horizon. Was it flying away form you or towards you?

About the UFO theory, its like, come on. OK, so the universe is huge, and the galaxy is more than enough, and actually, just our arm of it has "cosmic" proportions, but why would "they" have much interest in us? Wait, I better post that!

Depends where you live. There was a launch from White Sands recently.

Some years ago, I saw a lauch there (from Phoenix, looking East). The missile was aborted & in the pre-dawn the sun was shining on the vapor trail over White Sands - but not in Phoenix way to the West & it looked like a fluorescing (?) mushroom cloud. It looked real creepy & resulted in lots of panicky calls to 911 etc. But all it was was a missle lauch.

If you didn't identify it, it was a UFO.
If you really want to go down that slippery slope to find out, read "The Hunt for Zero Point" by Nick Cook.
Only you have the information about that particular sighting.

Things fall back into our atmosphere daily... much of it disintegrates as it goes through our atmosphere, but some reaches the ground. It could have been part of a satellite or some debris from a space station.
