Simple answer: People are stupid!
Less simple answer: There are more politicians and lawmakers (or people who have lawmakers in their pockets) who want to be able to get divorced then there are those who want to get married to someone of the same sex.
Isn't it also odd that more Christians pay attention to a couple of misunderstood and mistranslated phrases in the bible then they do to "till death do we part"?

RE:
Frivolous marriage ending in divorce legal, but gay marriage illegal?
Why has divorce become so accepted in this society when it is clearly detrimental to children. Divorce is not only legal, it has become the norm (more than 50% of American marriages end in divorce). How is it that people can keep gay marriage and adoption illegal saying it harms children when...

There is no shortage of ignorance in this country.
Better yet - why do all those politicians fight for preserving the "sanctity of marriage" when the majority of them have been divorced themselves? Many of them have married/divorced multiple times ....and I'd be willing to bet some of these "marriage protectors" are not even faithful in their marriages.
I find it amusing when some of the people who fight so hard against gay marriage (or other gay rights) turn out to be closeted themselves! Those who aren't closeted and trying to overcompensate are either religious nuts or just plain ignorant.

I'm so glad that the Gay community has enough sense to not follow the poor example of the "straight" crowd. Over 50% divorce rate while in the same breath condemning a viable portion of the community for values. More people need to look in the mirror.

neither should be acceptable. When you have self-centeredness as the norm, we run the risk of destroying the morals and tradition of marriage.
Since someone in the marriages are not fulfilling their vows, what makes us think that the gay community will be better?
If marriage is changed to accomodate gays, will it be changed again for multiple partners or sodomites?
The family is being attacked, if this was corrected and protected, then marriages that break up would be less.

It is ridiculous that in the year 2006 we are worried about people marrying that are gay. I totally agree with you, this angers me. I am a straight woman who has been happily married for fifteen years. I do not understand how gay marriage can threaten the sanctity of marriage. What a load of crap!

Well .... obviously the reason is it takes the heat off everything else our President is screwing up. "Yes I know there were no weapons of mass destruction and I've been wire tapping ...uh...uh.... Look two men are trying to get married!!!!" Also I think it is financial. The government doesn't have to pay any benefits to the 20+year partner of a dead gay man but if it is his widower then there is insurance payments , ssi and so on.

I think people should be held accountable for that "till death do you part" line. If you held people to that I'm sure they would think twice before rushing down the aisle

Bible says divorce is okay, Christians say divorce is okay. Reality doesn't matter to them.
