Some of these people are not even overweight. For instance, they'll say they're dying of thirst, so you give them something to drink, but they won't touch it. They'll say they never eat or drink in front of others. Before I just call them "weird", I want to know the cause so that I can be open-minded.

LOL, Davie, these people aren't trying to stick to a diet. They'll be starving, but they'll go hide to eat so that others can't see them. In a restaurant, they'll take food in a napkin and eat it in the bathroom. I'm beginning to think I need to call them weird, but I see a lot of people with this problem.

I don't like eating in front of other people for 2 reasons.

1. I'm a slow eater, I spend a lot of time chewing, and having someone ask me a question right after I take a bite of something just leaves me trying to talk with food in my mouth or waiting what seems like a minute to answer them.

2. When you screw up eating, it is usually bad. I'll admit it, I am not the master of keeping all the soup in my spoon actually in my spoon on the way to my mouth. And something like that is not easy to cover up or laugh off.

Some people with eating disorders do this. B/c their food habits are so weird, even eating itself has become secretive. They don't really know how to eat normally most of the time. It is either eat, eat, eat an unbelievable amount of food and then do something to get rid of it or don't eat at all for a while or eat very little. So they'd rather eat in secret. After all, the whole thing is a secret, so just eating in front of others is like letting the whole secret out.

Also, they may feel they don't deserve to eat and that everyone is looking at them thinking they're fat and they are eating anyway. It's humiliating.

You know what? I do this sometimes. I'll drink and eat in front of people I know..I'll drink in front of anyone but I don't like to eat when people are looking right in my face. I can't explain it really. I guess it's just embarrassment. Like, what if I spill something on myself or what if I'm too into the food and I look goofy munching away. I donno..now that I think about it, it is kind of weird.

I am one of the weird people . I don't really know why myself. I do not do it because of any weight thing ( I look great really ), I guess I got picked on a lot as a kid and grew into an adult that never really got over feeling uncomfortable in front of others. I do a lot of stuff on my own or with my children and just a few other "trusted others". This is just one of those things.

Sometimes people feel self-concious eating in front of others. They especially if younger think they will feel like a pig if seen eating to much when around others. They might feel paranoid and feel like people are stairring, it's hard to say but i'd ask them why it is they are doing that. It is not you, it is them acting strangely.

I would think so. When someone has this disorder, they tend to be very self conscious in public or around a group of people. They could be very introverted and keep to themselves. They could appear very nervous and uncomfortable in a social setting. They would stick out like a sore thumb.

I have read some litterature about panic attacks. But they allways seem to have a more scientific approach and that is nothing I need in my struggle to survive those horrible panic attacks. This is a "hand on" and very practical book. I felt it was written to me. I am sure that you are going to feel the same.

Joe Barry writes exactly how I think. The examples are perfectly described. And the method is genius. I recommend this book and thanks Joe Barry for writing it. It changes your life

some people feel uncomfortable eatting or drinking in front of others as they are loners. usually eatting alone or drinking alone. as far as in front of people, they feel as if they need to share it. many can't eat in front of others if they are not eatting. its a self-conscience thing. as far as offering someone something to drink, i've never given someine something and they not drink it. you ask them what they want. some people may be thirsty, but take the drink and wait till later after they left to drink it especially if your not drinking anything. its social behavior.

its just embarassment! dont say anything just let it slide. if this person is a close friend dont tell them its "weird". That makes them feel bad. Just discuss whatever the issue is.

hope that helps

You stay slim by not drinking and eating what people try to force on you. I admire those who say no, and mean it.
