thanx lola..i knew when it happened, was just wondering how far in backplay was the incident..they seemed to come back a fair way to deal with it.

sorry mike, to not mention your comment..I also believe something very unsavoury was said that perhaps transcended acceptable trash talking.

hey catphotographer
I mostly remember similar to you. In our telecast here in Oz, the play sort of just stopped and then the commentator said oh some incident has happened in backplay, we will see if we can see it, and then went to the actual incident, so it was sort of difficult to tell how far from play it was and what everyone saw.

i saw the whole game a few times actually and the line person (on the side) was close to the action. however the ball was far away thats why the ref didnt see it cus he was concentrating on where the ball was. the line person told the ref.

I haven't seen any replays since that day, but I remember that the game was stopped by the referee who went check on a foul (can't remember on which of the two sides). Zidane and Materazzi were actually on the edge of the pitch, talking and walking, when Zidane turned around and headbutted Materazzi. Since nobody was actually playing, or the action was very very slow at that moment, the linesman may actually have seen the incident.

I may be wrong because I only watched the game once, when it was broadcasted live, but that's my recall of the incident. I remember I was talking to my boyfriend's aunt who was sitting next to me when the headbutting happened, and I wouldn't have done that during a particularly exciting phase of the match. Hope this helps.

the incident occured about 10 minutes before the match ended and it was seen pretty clearly...i saw several different videos of it from several different angles. keep in mind that several stations were showing the match so there where cameras all over.

personally, i dont think materazzi talked trash to provoke zidane because why wouldnt he have done it earlier in the match to give italy an even bigger advantage? its very hard to score a goal with only 10 minutes left....and thats for both teams. so having zidane for another 10 minutes wouldnt have helped france too much and the lack of zidane for 10 minutes didnt help italy either.

i've seen several videos but the best one is in youtube, the scenes were closely shot and taken at a different angle.

in this vid, materrazi is seen talking while grabbing zidane. zidane said something indicating his shirt, he was even smiling a bit. materrazi made a reply, zidane just looked at him and started walking away. materrazi again spoke something to zidane's back and then apparently cursed him in italian. that was when zidane turned and slammed him.

Matterazi called Zidane's sister a bit*ch and he slurred about his mother.

A deaf man saw it and Zidane admitted it later.
