Really? I haven't heard much said either way. Other than the border states I don't think that too many Americans think of Canadians on a regular basis.

That's one of those broad questions that can't really be answered. How many is 'so many Americans'? How do you know they hate Canadians? How many have you interviewed? Thousands? Hundreds? Tens? One?
Americans and Canadians have much in common, but are two different countries. Every year, tens of thousands of Americans visit Canada to learn more about the country. Surely this is not the act of someone who hates Canada?
There are points of disagreement between the two governments -- such as the softwood lumber treaties -- but that doesn't mean they hate each other. Just that each side wants to get the best possible deal.
I'm sure some Americans hate Canadians, but I'm sure some Americans also hate Germans, Mexicans, Brits etc.etc.etc. And I'm also sure that these are isolated incidents.

LOL! Some of these answers are freakin hilarious!
The only American I know of who hates Canadians is Ann "Coultergeist". But she hates everyone...so that's nothing special.
I know lots of Americans and they've never told me (to my face anyway) anything negative about Canadians. Except for some people I know in the entertainment industry who say that Canadians don't tip well.

I think the word "hate" is not the right word. I would pick "envy" instead. I assume the person asking this question is Canadian.
You have a health care system where everyone can see a doctor without having to worry about paying the bill. Here in the USA, we pay more for our health care than anyone else in the world, yet millions of us are afraid to even see a doctor because of there is no way we can pay the huge bills that might ensue, since many of us have no health care insurance at all. And, even for those who do have health care insurance, we always wonder how much we will have to pay when we visit the doctor because our health insurance company might reject some of our claim, leaving us to pay more than the "co-pay" amount we have to pay in any event. This could amount to as much as 1/2 of the doctor's bill, and that is for those of us lucky enough to have health insurance.
Here's another example; you can get rid of a Prime Minister by having a "vote of no confidence" in your Parliament. We are stuck for 4 years with the person "selected" by the folks who gave us those nifty electronic voting machines which can be hacked without a trace. And now, no amount of lawlessness on the part of our "executive", not even committing treason by "outing" a covert CIA agent, will shorten his term of office.
And last, but not least, you have newspapers and news programs on your radio and television that challenge the "official" line from your government with actual news reporting. We have "Main Stream News" media that does little news reporting, but mostly spouts opinion. Most of our "news media" are best described in one phrase, "If it bleeds, it leads!" And we have the "Fox News Network", a media outlet that as much of a "mouthpiece" for our "Executive" as Pravda was for the Kremlin in the 1960s.
Envious? Hell Yes!

This is news to me and I live in a border state. Since when does Canadian or any other nationality mean we hate you? I don't understand why everyone is so anxious to ask why Americans hate!

Americans don't hate Canadians. Most Americans don't even realize that Canada exists. How can they hate someone that they don't even know is there? It's not hate, it's ambivalence.

I live across the water from canada, did not know "you guys" (canadians) were hated.
Maybe you should have elaborated a bit, so we could try to understand what you are talking about. Sounds more like you have a personal problem to me.
