Maybe your problem has nothing to do with a virus or anything coming from the outside.

Running a specific virus program isn't going to prevent crashing. Sometimes it may even cause the crash. You've got a mis-configured program causing problems. It may be a device driver or a specific program you're running.
Track what you're doing and attempt to upgrade whatever program seems to be active at the time. If there is nothing you can associate with the crash, start updating device drivers.

Perhaps, the problem is not related to viruses or any other malicious files. There are a score of other problems which could cause your system to crash. If this is a recent problem then retrace your steps. Did you install something recently? This applies to both hardware or software. Hardware problems could be overheating your cpu or problems with the hard drive or a defective graphic card. Any software can cause conflicts in Windows which can crash it.
First, perform an error checking on your hard drive. Right click your hard drive and scroll down to Properties. Under Error Checking, click on [Check Now]. Windows will examine your hard drive and see if there are any bad sectors on your hard drive. If there are bad sectors, Windows will isolate those sectors so no data will be stored on them.

What platform do you use? If you have Windows ME it can crash anytime. It is time to reinstall Windows or upgrade your computer. Do you use an antispyware program? You have to clean out the spyware. And change your browser to Mozilla Firefox.

If its Norton, its because Norton has a history of doing this. I removed Norton and now use Zone Alarm. I like it much better.
