I see things better with images, not numbers.
So here is my questions;

1. I can visualize this. Draw a round circle, divide it by 1/2, and you get the circle split down the middle. No problem with this. Even when I divide it by 1/4 - 4 pieces.

2. How would I divide the round circle if the fraction was 4/16?

When I ask people who know math to do this for me, they walk away...

It would mean separating the circle into 16 equal parts and highlighting 4 of them. This, amazingly, is equal to 1/4.

Don't know why your friends would walk away though; maybe to keep from smacking you?

Two ways:

First, 4/16 = 1/4 so you could see it as 1 of 4 pieces.

Second, you could draw 8 lines dividing the circle into 16 equal pieces. Color in four of these pieces and you 4 of 16. To draw the 8 lines, just keep dividing the previous pieces with the new lines.

On the second approach, if you take four pieces that are next to each other, you should notice that they are the same as 1 large piece if the circle had been cut into four pieces using 2 lines.

4/16 = 1/4, so you divide the circle into 4 equal pieces.

If you can visualize the circle being segmented into fourths, then take each fourth and cut it into four more equal pieces -- like a really big pizza. This will result in a total of 16 pieces. Once you do that, you "color in" four pieces that are right next to each other. You should be able to see that this shaded area is the exact same thing as 1/4. Does that help?

Split the circle eight times (so that you end up with equal pieces), and that will give you 16 pieces. Any four of those pieces together form 4/16, or 1/4 of the circle.

divide the circle in half ...2/2 halves
now divide the circle in half again at right angles to the first division... 4/4
4/4 =16/16 1/4 is = to 4/16

slice a circle into 16 even slices by drawing 8 lines down the middle, now shade 4 of those slices, you will have 12 slices, which is only 3/4 of 16, so you shaded 1/4 of the circle.

So you still have 1/4 of a circle.

Simplify the fraction - find the greast common factor

Both the top and the bottom can be divided by 1, and 2.
But those are not the lease.

You can divide each by 4 - that would make the top 1 and the bottom 4 .. so, 1/4th.
