How can some people say human beings are not part of the animal kingdom, but a higher being?

Many people are insulted when someone tries to explain to them that we are a member of the animal kingdom, just like dogs, fish, frogs, insects, etc. I'd like to know what exactly these people think we are??? There's only two groups of living things on the planet, plants and animals (and some say fungus is the third). So if we're not animals, are we plants? I don't think so.

I don't believe in God......but I know if you do you're not supposed to go around calling others @$$ holes just for being curious about other's beliefs.

That makes absolutely no sense. Every animal has an extraordinary trait that allows it to survive...our's is smarts, other animals' might be speed, strength, able to fly, their size, they're shape, they're strong sense of smell, sight, feel, I could go on and on... And besides that...lets look at what a mammal is, which is the group of animals we belong to. A mammal has hair or fur (we do), a mammal gives birth to live young (we do), a mammal's body produces it's own heat (we do), mammals have four legs (we do! (don't go there), etc, etc, etc. Why put us in a separate category?

Because they don't speak English? Does that mean other races aren't human? Come on! Animals have ways of communicating what we can't even begin to understand! Just because we can't understand it doesn't mean it isn't there.

I can't take the ignorance!!! Doesn't anyone do research before they decide to believe something and defend it all costs??????

Ahh, but you forget that people are egotistical maniacs a lot of the time, and also, since we're the only (that we know of) species that can imagine and feel emotion, we tend to delude ourselves into believing that we're somehow better than every other species. It's our way of coping with the fact that we are, in fact, no different from cows or roses or the mold that grows in the fridge.

Of course, if you take people's attitudes in a religious context, it holds new meaning, because if the bible says that humans were created to rule the world above all else, then it obviously must be true. That whole superiority-complex thing that religion tends to give.

We're neither plants or animals. The other group of living things they forgot to mention are Humans. How come they can consider a "fungus" a living thing and not give us our own group. We're not animals because animals are wild creatures that neither have a complete thought or can increase in intelligence. I know that we've been compared to apes w/the whole darwinism theory, but that's exactly what it is, a theory, not a proven fact. If we did originate from apes then why are there still apes that have not evolved? Wouldn't that eliminate the whole "survival of the fittest" theory? They would have either died off or become humans themselves. But they're neither dead nor human, because they're apes. Are they smart? of course, but they're still animals, not humans. It's not "Higher being" vs. "darwinism", it's really just a matter of common sense, research, and just watching life take place. Another thing is, if both animals and humans were created by a "Higher being" wouldn't that explain why there are so many similarities? It's like when you write different things. It's all a bunch of different words or paragraphs, but all the same handwriting. And that's why I can't conceive us as humans ever being compared to wild animals.

Don't get me wrong, I have a lot of respect for animals, and I love animals for what they are. Have you noticed any pigs or dogs asking questions on here? Why not? We try to study animals and learn how to communicate with them, why don't they do the same with us? Why is it okay if I eat chicken and keep a dog on a leash, but not a human? Have fish written any good novels lately? Why don't sheep build bombs and go to war against rival sheep herds?

We ARE animals. We are living breathing creatures.
Thats the basic definition of an animal - living breathing creature.
All we are is a smarter group. We are from the primate group. Actually, I think that there are some animals that are smarter than us in this world. We just don't know it yet and by the time we do, we won't believe it.

Basically because we communicate that thought in a language an animal can't argue with. I believe many animals(dolphins,some apes) are at a higher level, because not only can they communicate with each other and other animals,they have managed to understand us aswell. Something we can't do.
