It's not just a seashell that makes that sound. Anything hollow will make the same sound. Try with a cup or glass. What causes it? Probably since the cup blocks out all other sounds, what's left is what the ear would hear if it were almost deaf.

it's the sound of the blood circulating in your ear region. :)
when you stick a seashell in your ear (or any object with enough concavity, i guess, like a glass), you tend to create a hollow space where sound can reverberate in. the same concept is in action with caves, and why your voice echoes in one.
yes, the sound of blood in your ear may actually be very very quiet, but the reverberating properties of the seashell, and its proximity to your ear (well, it IS sticking in your ear :p ) amplifies the sound enough to be distinctly heard. ^_^

I've always wanted to know the answer to this question myself - I think it's possibly the air gowing through the seashell (or so I have heard...)

the blood rushing in your body you are isolating your ear and are able to hear the blood moving in your head ...its not the ocean like most people believe it to be
